How to Green your Beauty Routine

Giving your beauty routine a green makeover is one of the easiest ways to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. Though it may seem daunting to switch out your holy grail items for natural beauty products, with a little research it can be done! Here are some tips for giving your beauty routine a sustainable makeover.

1. Research

Researching beauty products might sound silly, but think about it. These products are coming in contact with your skin on an everyday basis. If your daily routine includes a bunch of harmful chemicals and scary preservatives, you’re not just hurting the environment – you’re hurting yourself! Do some research. Check out what ingredients have been red-flagged, and what’s going into your favourite products. Start looking into green dupes for your favourites. Platforms like Instagram and Reddit are great resources for discovering new products and their reviews. There’s a lot of information out there, and it can sometimes be overwhelming when you don’t know where to start. Luckily with more people catching on to green beauty, more people are talking about it. With a quick search, you’ll likely be able to find workshops to help guide you through your green makeover. Toronto’s Green Living Expo is a perfect opportunity to explore green beauty alternatives. Click here to find more green experiences and other Events in Toronto.

2. Purge

Take a look at your beauty collection and take inventory of what you actually use. It’s so easy for things like makeup and skin care to build up without realizing. Though it might seem counterintuitive to throw things out when you’re trying to go green, minimalization often goes hand in hand with sustainability. Keep what you need and get rid of what you don’t use.  Having said that, be reasonable and don’t be wasteful in the name of going green! Go through your products and use them until you can’t anymore. Realistically, you won’t be swapping out your entire collection for green products all at once anyway, so use what you have until you no longer can – and then begin to sort through what to keep/re-buy/toss. If you find you have several palettes that you no longer use but can’t justify throwing away, give them away to a friend!

3. Recycle

Recycling doesn’t just mean tossing empty containers into the blue bin once you’re done with them. Consider packaging when purchasing new beauty products. Many cosmetic and beauty companies are becoming more mindful of how their products impact the environment, so start looking for more sustainable options. Some brands are even taking it another step further with incentive based recycling programs that encourage you to return packing in exchange for a reward. UK based Lush Cosmetics a leader in this department, with a recycling program that exchanges a fresh face mask for every five empty black pots a customer returns. Not only that, they have made more than half their products package free. Lush Cosmetics is really at the forefront of green beauty, and are continuing to pave the way for other brands. 4. Multipurpose

Look for beauty products that have multiple uses. Finding a product that can function as an eyeshadow/blush/lip colour will not only save you money, it’ll cut down on waste and harmful chemicals entering the environment once you’re done with it. Keep in mind that beauty products don’t always come from the drug store or Sephora, take a look in your pantry for ingredients that can also double as beauty supplies. Coconut oil has become a holy grail item for many as it can act as a moisturizer, make-up remover, hair mask and more. Honey is another household ingredient that can do wonders for your skin. The best part about using natural ingredients that you can find in your kitchen is knowing exactly what you’re putting on your skin.

These tips are just the beginning of how to green your beauty routine. It is easier now more than ever to find information about what’s going into our every day products, and what kinds of ingredients we should be avoiding. So, go do your research and enjoy trying out some new, eco-friendly beauty products!
