Home to the famous international film festival that has the most high profile lineup of celebrities in the world, Toronto is the best city in the world for film lovers. So, unsurprisingly, there at countless free movie events happening around the city this summer. Chillwall.com has them all. Check out some notable ones below!

Sail-In Cinema

This is the most unique free movie screening happening in Toronto this summer. Described as a two-sided floating movie experience, films are screened on a barge in the Toronto Harbour. You can watch movies for free from Sugar Beach or you can park your boat in Lake Ontario and enjoy the film from the water! This year’s theme will be “Flashback to the 80s”.

Cultura Festival

One of the many low key festivals happening is the Cultural Festival which celebrates cultural diversity in Toronto all July at Mel Lastman Square. There will be free feature films (as well as music, international street food and dances). Some alternative films like Brooklyn and The Theory of Everything will be shown. Stop by the food village for some Taco Fusion or some Banjara Indian food before settling down for a free film!

City Cinema at Yonge-Dundas Square

Happening all summer, the City Cinema Series at the famous Yonge-Dundas Square will feature movies following this year’s theme of comedy. Some films this year include Bridesmaids and Spaceballs. The cool thing about this event is that attendees can watch an outdoor movie in the heart of downtown Toronto. Do some shopping, grab some food at one of the hundreds of food places nearby and head to the square at sunset. Some seating is available for the film, or you can bring your own chair!

Free Flicks at Haborfront

Free flicks will be shown Wednesday nights on the waterfront at Harbourfront Centre. There’s nothing like watching a free flick at the Sirius Stage on the shore of Lake Ontario under the stars! This series will feature fun and inspiring films, featuring everything from famous blockbusters such as Mean Girls to lesser known films such as The grand Seduction. Be sure to cast your vote for the audience choice screening which is happening on August 31!

TIFF Free Screen 2016  

The TIFF organization holds free screening events during the summer leading up to the international film festival. Free Screen 2016 will take place June through August and will feature a series of free screenings dedicated to experimental and avant-garde film and video works. Also presented by TIFF is a free screening of the Sean Baker film Tangerine (which scored the first Gotham Award for a transgender actor) on July 10 (Note: this screening is only free for students).

Bollywood Summer Series

Presented by the Aga Khan Museum, this Bollywood film series presents films that influenced the Bollywood genre while it was developing from the 1960s to today. The films shown will be Pakeezah and Jodhaa Akbar, both of which showcase the histories of Muslim civilizations. Films will be screened in the park nearby. Stop by the Museaum during the day, and later bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy a show!
