4 Cities For College Students On A Budget

June 20, 2016

Being a broke college student means being thrifty about which cities you can afford to visit. Check out the best student-friendly cities below!

Budapest, Hungary

One of the reasons that Budapest attracts so many young people is its party scene. Vibrant clubs can be found all over the city, most serving drink specials which are amazingly cheap. We recommend visiting Holdudvar which has a club, a restaurant and has no cover. Also try Caesar’s Söröző, located in the party district Király utca, which serves drinks for as low as 250 Hungarian Forints (about $1 American) and has plenty of drink specials. If you prefer to be outdoors, don’t worry because downtown Budapest is covered with boardwalk spaces with countless bars for those who wish to drink outside. While enjoying a night outside, check out the Budapest Eye Ferris Wheel! Don’t feel like you can only party in this city, however, because Budapest’s party scene does not compromise its unmistakable beauty. By day, make sure to check out Buda Castle or the famous Fisherman’s Bastion before hitting the clubs.

Montreal, Canada

Montreal is great for students because of its cheap prices and relaxed drinking laws compared to the rest of Canada. Students from all over Canada flock to Montreal year round because it is cheap to do anything (including drink). The legal drinking age in Montreal is younger than the rest of Canada, making the concentration of students very high here. We recommend Peel Pub for some drinks and some good, cheap food or Café Campus which hosts various festivals and performances nightly.

Prague, Czech Republic

There is an amazing combination of interesting clubs and stunning sights in Prague. Student discounts are also offered at many attractions in Prague, making it suitable for any broke college student (be sure to bring some form of student Identification with you). To see Prague Castle can take you all day, which is both well worth it and free! Start from the bottom in the city’s narrow streets and work your way up through the courtyard and finally the castle. We promise you will not be disappointed. Most hostels in Prague are reasonable, some costing as low as $20 American a night. Many hostels also have pub crawls which usually provide unlimited beer and wine to start for a reasonable base fee. One club not to miss is the famous six floor Karlovy lázně where each floor has a different theme.

Melbourne, Australia

Described by many as the world’s most liveable city, Melbourne’s many universities make it a good destination for student fun. We suggest trying out Turf bar, an old-school spot with tons of grills and brands of draught beers. This bar even has a backpacker’s night for travellers. Another great spot is the Victoria hotel, a gathering place for travellers where you can get $4 house wine every day, $7 premium pints from 5-8 and beers starting at $5. After enjoying the nightlife, be sure to check out the Queen Victoria Market, a huge marketplace spanning 2 city blocks offering clothing, accessories and a ton of speciality food for fair prices!
