Summer is here, and with so many fun things to do outdoors, you should probably choose wisely when planning your summer vacation. Here are 4 reasons why San Francisco is the ultimate summer destination.

Stern Grove Festival Free Concerts in the Park

The outdoor musical festival Stern Grove festival will be taking place in San Francisco from June 19 – August 21. Every Sunday starting at 2 pm, a stellar free concert featuring some amazing artists will be available. Admission is FREE! The festival will take place at Sigmund Stern Grove in San Francisco (19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard). A typical performance lasts two to three hours. These performances are super popular, so be sure to get there early! The famous Janelle Monae will be performing to open the festival on June 19, and many other different types of artists will perform this year such as the Golden State Breakers and even the San Francisco Symphony!

Shopping, Eating and Chilling at Union Square

When you can’t decide what else to do you should definitely visit Union Square. The area is filled with shopping places, hotels, and a theater district. One of the most well-known shopping districts in the country can be found here. Countless boutiques and department stores featuring everything from Tiffany’s, Sax Fifth Avenue and the Gap (which has flagship stores here) can be found here to satisfy any taste and budget. The dining scene here is equally impressive as it has countless cafes, taverns, casual restaurants and bakeries. We suggest visiting Anderson Bakery for a Saffron Raisin Twist!

Nihonmachi Street Fair

If you really want to explore San Francisco’s Japantown district, you need to attend this festival. The Nihonmachi Street Fair will happen on August 6 and 7 this year. This festival was created to celebrate Asian-Pacific American culture and it will feature performances, art, music and food! The festival likes to call itself the “melting pot” of street fairs as there is so much to do. Two stages will be present where Hawaiian music & dance, Japanese dance and more will be performed. There will be a food fest taking place featuring food like teri burger, okonomiyaki, and waffles! There will also be an Art & Soul of Jtown exhibit featuring Asian artists from San Francisco (this year’s theme will be the 110th Anniversary of Japantown). San Francisco’s Japantown is one of the last remaining in the country, and this festival will let you experience Japanese culture like no other!

Walk around Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is definitely the Central Park of San Francisco (although it is actually 20% larger). The most happening place in the park is the Music Concourse Area. Aside from hosting music performances in the summer months, local food trucks are often parked here offering local style foods to visitors. Located near here is the De Young fine art museum (a Museum in a park, you heard right), which features both American and international contemporary collections. Also visit the Japanese Tea Garden, a landmark of the park featuring paths, ponds and a teahouse (this is the oldest Japanese garden in the country).
