Breakfast the most important meal of the day; we’ve all heard the saying at one point or another. While many of these sayings can seem to be a little empty, in this case, it happens to be quite accurate. The right fuel helps you not only wake up but can keep you going throughout the rest of your day. This knowledge is shared all over the world, with each nation containing its own individual take on breakfast. Interestingly, despite all the variety of bases and tastes from all over the world, there are many commonalities amongst nations for the most important meal of the day breakfast.
Try Something New
Luckily enough, we live in an age where food is not just limited to its country of origin. A simple internet search or walk around your town will usually be enough to get a good look at what other nation’s food is available in your local area, whether that’s dim sum from the local Chinese restaurant or an Italian cheesecake. Of course, breakfast at home is often the most relaxing meal, and now adding a new taste is easier than ever. Obviously, there is no one ‘right’ breakfast. Each person has different needs and different tastes.
Here, we will go over some of the components the world sees as breakfast foods, and how they incorporate this food and drink into their own dishes.
Coffee
Coffee is one of the most common drinks paired with breakfast, especially in Europe and South America. In France, a nation known for fashion and food, pastries like croissants and baguettes are often buttered and dipped into coffee, a treat which is nice and simple to try at home yourself. Across the world, in Brazil, strong coffee is a key component to a nice breakfast. Combine this with ham, cheese, and a thick soup known as feijoada, made of meats and black beans, and you’re well on your way for your own taste of South America’s largest country.
Meat
Protein is a great way to give you energy, and there are no shortage of countries who jump on this as a part of their traditional breakfasts. For breakfast in Mexico, for instance, it is not uncommon to start with a heavy and hearty dish. This includes food such as chilaquiles. For this meal, corn tortillas are cut into quarters and are lightly fried. On top of this, salsa or mole is poured, with pulled chicken occasionally added to the mix. Meanwhile, in Germany, where the food is known to be very hearty and full and meat and cheeses, breakfast is just as important. A standard German breakfast includes cold meats, local cheeses, and a selection of freshly baked bread. Not too dissimilar to what many of us have already, so it’s a great place to start.
Fried Food
Usually seen as a lunch or dinner food in the west, there are plenty of countries which embrace fried food as an important part of their breakfast. While it’s hard to pin down just one type of traditional Chinese breakfast, as the world’s most populous nation has a considerable variety on offer by region alone, among our favourites is the combination of warmed soy milk and you tiao, a type of fried dough sticks. Making the trip to Africa now, the traditional Nigerian breakfast is something which almost everyone wants to try; that is, once they hear about it. This breakfast consists of a deep fried meal made from peeled black-eyed beans that have been cooked with various spices. The great thing here is that they can also be easily enjoyed throughout the rest of the day.
By experimenting with the breakfast food of other nations and cultures we can allow ourselves a taste which is perfect for us and our families. Mix and match, add your own custom spin and, who knows, what you create might even catch on. That’s the great thing about food – it keeps evolving, and the only limit is your imagination.
After you have enjoyed an amazing breakfast to start your day, discover a fun activity near you to enjoy the rest of your weekend.
